We arrived back in Prince Rupert, BC, Canada to fuel up, arrange for broken down parts to be shipped to us here and prepare for our return trip to...... Alaska! We will cruise around the Prince Rupert until our parts are here.

Yes, it is crazy but we need to go back to this beautiful place called Alaska once more! We are delaying our trip back to Vancouver area until September of 2010. The Mad Dogs will be back in Alaskan waters within the next 2 weeks (We need to wait for a weather window for safe travels).

More information available soon

After visiting Prince Rupert, BC, Canada to fuel up and check in with Canada Customs, we have since departed  and are traveling south along the BC coast for the remaining winter season. Our plans are to spend as much time as we want exploring the coast and seeing what it has to show us. We revel in the the freedom of being able to enjoy the beauty and solitude of the west coast at our own pace and on no fixed schedule.

We wish all of our visitors a Happy New Year and a peaceful 2010

After travelling north through Alaska, enjoying some incredible weather, we arrived back in Bartlett Cove, Glacier Bay. Gustavus and Bartlett Cove is home to many friends and we looked forward to visiting with them and the other kind people that call this home. We plan to spend a few additional weeks here enjoying this magical place called Glacier Bay.

Due to Customs and Immigration requirements of the USA, we needed to exit US waters for a short time before returning to Alaska and renewing our Cruising License. We spent this time taking care of a few repairs and other items in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. We will be returning to Alaska and Glacier Bay National Park for the remainder of the summer 2009. We are looking forward to seeing our friends in Gustavus and Glacier Bay when we are back up there.

First of all we wish all our family & friends worldwide a happy and  prosperous New Year. Thanks again to everyone for all your kind emails and messages received.

As we sailed and traveled North from Victoria, BC in April 2008, Mad Dog Voyager has stopped in many towns and cities where we have befriended many people along the way. Gustavus, Alaska, located near Glacier Bay, is one of these town we have visited while in Alaska, USA. We are replenishing our food supply, fuel & propane before heading back into the Glacier Bay area to try out our new Canon camera lens (better quality) to provide you with better photos (we hope) of the beautiful landscape and wildlife in Alaska.

In search of wolfs
Unfortunately the weather has turned for the worst and we are forced to stay in Bartlett Cove another day. The forecast is for Southerly winds 25 - 35 kts with gusts up to 45 kts and we watched as the barometer dropped from 1015 to 990 millibars overnight

In order to get into Glacier Bay from Bartlett Cove we need to head south from Bartlett Cove, round the corner, turn to the north and pass through the Sitakaday Narrows, which have a maximum tidal flow of almost 8 kts. Due to the timing of the tides we would have to head South from Bartlett Cove traveling with the tide but against the wind (the wind here generates both wind waves and large swells). We have already seen that this combination of tide and wind creates some pretty turbulent waters within Bartlett Cove.

Once we reach the outer edge of Bartlett Cove, we would round the corner and turn North into the Bay. Now we would be faced with an outgoing tide but have the wind at our backs. With the wind and swell coming from behind us, and a strong tidal flow hitting us head on, it would be a pretty uncomfortable and bumpy ride. As we are not in any rush, we'll just wait it out in Bartlett Cove another day and see how the weather turns.

Once back in Glacier Bay, we have planned to go deeper into the more remote areas of Glacier Bay, we want to get some photos of the only animals we haven't seen yet - wolves. There are supposed to be several large groups of wolves in the Bay and they would be the icing on our photographic cake.

We are planning to pick up additional propane, gasoline (for the Yamaha generator), top up the diesel tank and pick up a few extra groceries. A couple of days ago we took out the folding bikes and rode them the 9 miles / 15 km into the beautiful town of Gustavus, Alaska. Visually it was a wonderful trip (a nice road through dense forest) but we weren't looking forward to doing it with 3 propane bottles and 4 jerry cans (5 gal / 20 l each) of gasoline.

Since riding into Gustavus we've met many nice, friendly people (as well as reacquainting with people we met previously). Twice we've been offered vehicles to do our running around. This has been great! We were able to get our propane, fuel and groceries without exhausting ourselves in the process.

Gustavus is a small "town" (more of a collection of 450 people living in the same area), and the people we have interacted with so far have all been very friendly and helpful.

Thanks to our new friends: Kate & Fritz, Bill & Marilyn, Bruce, Vince and many more kind folks in Gustavus.
