About this image:
Halibut taken between South Passage & Pt Adolphus, Alaska
Having enjoyed our stay in
Glacier Bay, Alaska, we decided it was time to move on.
We left the park, and headed out near Point Adolphus, a
world renowned location for whale watching. Here we found a
nice anchorage and stayed a couple of days. The whale
watching was incredible (click
here to see the incredible video of our "Whale Watching"),
Steller Sea Lions were swimming around, various dolphins
visited us and the fishing was poor, until suddenly... We
had the hook in the water for quite a few hours with not
even a single nibble. Leo said "Why not throw down the
big octopus and
see what happens. We placed a bit of old salmon bait on the
end, dropped it down and waited. After an hour we were ready
to pull in the line when suddenly "Bzzzz" something took the
bait. We reeled it in and as it came close to the surface we
saw another nice halibut at the end of the line. As we were
bringing it in and getting the gear ready to haul him in, a
shadow started lurking below. The movement and struggle in
the water attracted a Steller Sea Lion who was thinking this
was a smorgasbord. Here you can see him approaching the
"snack truck". |

About this image:
Hey! Get away from my fish!
Here you can see the Steller Sea Lion, flippers
outstretched, swimming closer to what might be an easy
snack. Fortunately for us, the shadow of us looming
overhead, the very large halibut thrashing about below and
the whole situation a little too suspect for him, the
Steller Sea Lion decided to head off for a more manageable
snack. |

About this image:
"Come to Papa!"
This a great photo of this 42" / 106 cm halibut as it swims
at the surface. Notice the clear, pristine waters of Point
Adolphus, Alaska. |

About this image:
What's the temperature like out there?
As halibut, or most fish, usually don't get above the water
very often, it looks like this halibut is "Dipping" his fin
into the air "just testing to see how the temperature is" |

About this image:
What's for dinner?
Here stands Dean with the Catch of the Day. This halibut was
a great catch, measuring 42" / 106 cm. This is almost the
largest we like to bring on board. It's small enough to be
manageable, cleaned, filleted and packaged, but large enough
to save us from fishing for a few more days. We didn't have
a scale to weigh him, but just a looking at it gives you a
good idea. |

About this image:
Make some space in the freezer
Here is the results of cleaning and filleting our
halibut. This container holds all of the meat from our
catch. Later it was packaged in roughly 1 lb / 500 gr
vacuum sealed bags and headed into the freezer. All said
and done we had 16 packages of fresh halibut, weighing
almost 15 lbs / 6.8 kg. |
