Cruising Alaska / Summer 2010
- updated Aug 18, 2010
Our continuous Alaska journey…
Our Alaska journey can now be best described as continuous; any other
description would indicate that there is an end in sight! From this
point on, all our future plans are being written in pencil;
non-permanent and quickly changed. This is the third summer that we are
spending our time enjoying the landscape, the beauty and the fantastic
scenery in Alaska. From our originally planned 2 week stay in Glacier
Bay, Alaska, this “continuous journey” has afforded us sights, sounds
and experiences that have been without parallel. Our loose plans are to
spend the summer in Alaska and travel South this fall - but then again
we only “planned” to be in Glacier Bay for two weeks…
The destination is not the purpose of the voyage; it is merely the
starting point for the next leg of our journey.

Cruising
Alaska / Winter 2009
- updated April 24, 2010
As our journey continues with a planned final
destination of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada we will be
travelling south through Alaska and plan to be in
Canada for Christmas and New Year's Eve. The Winter
season presents many opportunities for wildlife and
landscape viewing and photography that do not exist
the rest of the year.

Cruising Alaska / Fall 2009 / Part 3
Throughout Alaska, colors explode as Autumn
approaches. Many animals are out in full swing
eagerly collecting and hoarding away food to carry
them through winter. Blue skied days and clear
evenings reveal the result of summers' (limited) sun.
With our attentions turned towards to little details
again, we find beauty underfoot as we explore
Alaska's Rainforest Coast.

Glacier Bay from the Air (Fall 2009)
Having travelled everywhere possible in Glacier Bay by boat and
having walked many of the shores by foot, we were delighted when
our friend Bruce Kruger said “Sure, let’s go for a flight”. For
the next couple hours, as if on a magical carpet ride of
discovery, we explored Glacier Bay from the air.

Cruising Alaska / Fall 2009 / Part 2
Glacier Bay is a hotspot of weather activity. From sun to cloud,
clear to snow and sudden torrential rains, the weather changes
on a rapidly unpredictable schedule here. As if the clouds in
Blue Mouse Cove were a premonition of weather to come, the
clouds, often of the low-hanging gray variety in the autumn,
transformed and morphed into a variety of shapes, types and
colors over the next few days...

Cruising Alaska / Summer 2009 / Part 2
A light haze blew in overnight, screening out
the bright blue skies of the last while. Hoping it will blow
over soon; the Mad Dogs spend a few days exploring the shore,
taking in a little local cruising and addressing a few
maintenance items. This is capped by one of the most incredible
experiences in Alaska to date! Click the link below to view all
images in this section including wolf pictures and

Cruising Alaska / Summer 2009 / Part 1
Our journey continues north in the direction
of Glacier Bay. Drastically different from last summer, the
weather has been very pleasant as we’ve enjoyed many days of
sunny, warm weather. As we headed near Five Fingers Islands, we
were once again reminder how the Nautical Charts (maps) are only
a good “Reference” material. Several of these Islands don’t show
up on our Nautical Charts, and this lighthouse appears, on the
chart, to be standing in the water. We believe this is one of
the last of a dying group of manned lighthouses in the Alaska
waters. Our journey for today ends as we approach Gambier Bay
and look for spot to settle in.

Cruising Alaska / Spring 2009 / Part 2
US restrictions (as with many countries) limit how
long travelers can stay in US waters uninterrupted. The Mad Dogs are
traveling back towards to Prince Rupert to fulfill that requirement,
however we see this as merely a portion of our journey and enjoy the
sights and sounds as much as possible. After a short stay in Prince
Rupert we head once again North towards Alaska.

Finishing up our winter in Glacier Bay, we make a few final visits
including a couple of runs into Juneau with our friend Bruce. Once our
“Goodbyes” are said, we push forward and make our way south towards
Ketchikan and the Canadian border.

Glacier Bay
National Park (Winter 2008-2009)
A continuing look at the landscape of Glacier Bay in
the winter and the challenges presented to the animals that stay for the
winter. While the Mad Dogs also spent the winter in Glacier Bay, we
spent it inside our nice warm boat. We observed the passing of the
season while the animals outside eagerly awaited the arrival of spring
and another season
of
bountiful food and nutrients fueled by warming
days and increasing sunlight.

Glacier Bay
National Park (Winter 2008-2009)
As fall gives way to winter, the colors of the landscape dissolve as a
blanket of white purity descends. Although fewer in numbers, we see more
animals as they descend from the hills towards the shoreline where food
is more abundant. Surprising encounters with wolves, Grizzly Bears and
moose provide highlights to the beginning of our winter in Glacier Bay.

the list of places to visit.
The autumn colors, wildlife and landscapes are unlike almost anywhere
else we’ve travelled. The people, places and experiences have made a

Cruising Alaska / Summer 2008
This summer finds us traveling through various areas
of Alaska, both inside
and outside of Glacier Bay. During this peak feeding seasons we witness
as huge Humpback Whales propel themselves out of the water (called
breaching) and splashing down with a thunderous clap.

Cruising to Alaska / Summer 2008
April 26, 2008 and along with our friends Yvonne &
Bruno, on their own sailboat Momo,
we are departing for our journey to Alaska and specifically to Glacier
Bay National Park. Glacier Bay is an incredible natural Bay that only
250 years ago was one solid pack of glacier ice measuring 4,000 ft
(1,200 m) thick! We are anxious and excited to see what this journey
brings. / 36 images

EXTRA
photos of Alaska
The following photos have been added to the photo
albums out of date. They were photos that we had originally, for one
reason or another, decided not to include on the website. However on
looking at them again we decided they are quite nice and should be
included as well.
