The Code of (expected) Rights of Suppliers
And
Customers
Solutions
The Mad Dogs have received many emails from fellow boaters and people
that have had similar experiences to ours. Many of these people agree
with us that if more action and stronger stands are taken against some
of these
shoddy products and suppliers (This include some of the big players!), eventually the manufacturers will get the
point and start solving customer issues or hopefully start producing
better quality products or just close their doors.
What can consumers do now to protect their hard-earned dollars?
When planning to buy, replace or actually buying any new item consider
the value of the warranty or guarantee. Most warranties and guarantees
should be treated with skepticism - if there is a loophole most suppliers
will use it.
Spare parts
Will spare parts be available in the future or should I buy them now?
Ask for current pricelists today and ask about the availability of spare/replacement parts (get
it in writing by email
or on paper not verbally!). Try to find out if your spare parts are
available via other sources!
$90.00 versus $24.00
Investigate if these spare parts are available through other sources.
Many times electric motors, engines, pumps, filters, seals & gaskets or
other components can be sourced from other suppliers at substantially
reduced costs. For example, we recently found a supplier of motor
brushes for our
Spectra Watermaker from the manufacturer of the electric motor.
Spectra charged us over $90 for two carbon brushes and springs, this
alternate source $24!
Are you forced to buy an entire “parts kit” if you actually only need a
single part or two?
Traveling?
Will you be able to get parts from local suppliers when travelling? Get
actual part numbers, part references or other identification
information, in writing or by email, before leaving.
If you are travelling overseas, how are parts able to be shipped? Many
companies only offer UPS or FedEx - these services are very expensive
when shipping overseas or even to Alaska! Remember when going off-shore
to be prepared to pay hefty import duties by foreign countries!
